NC environmental regulators OK Outer Banks bridge

Posted September 20, 2012

The Herbert C. Bonner Bridge connects Hatteras Island with the mainland.

— North Carolina environmental regulators have signed off on a plan to replace the nearly 50-year-old bridge spanning Oregon Inlet and linking Hatteras Island to points north such as Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills.

The Division of Coastal Management announced Thursday its decision to issue the permit to the state Department of Transportation to build the 2.8-mile Bonner Bridge replacement and demolish the existing bridge when the new structure is complete. The permit followed a public comment period and reviews by more than a dozen federal and state agencies.

The new bridge will parallel the existing one.

Other permits are still required before construction can begin early next year on the $200 million-plus project. Environmental groups have sued to try to prevent the replacement plans from going forward. They prefer a longer bridge going out into Pamlico Sound.

What about the sea rise...soon enough the 320 million dollar bridge will be an island of its own connecting only water to water.

And some day the sun will die out but before that the earth will heat up tremendously and life will die out before the planet is consumed by the Red Giant our sun will become. Let's just lay down and die now...

"Fortunately your opinion is so far out of the mainstream as to be unworthy of consideration"

Yet the plans for the bridge move forward...

"Instead of spending the money where tens of thousands of people would benefit 365 days a year, politically connected and wealthy beachfront homeowners get a bridge to their vacation homes.

Whine? Yeah it is a shame NC keeps their money pot going. So you do not support replacing an old bridge but want to widen I95?

"Instead of spending the money where tens of thousands of people would benefit 365 days a year, politically connected and wealthy beachfront homeowners get a bridge to their vacation homes."

Tax revenue from tourism on Hatteras Island more than justifies the cost of the bridge. Do some cost benefit analysis before you declare this wasteful spending.

    "Of course it will happen."

Are you a prophet now? Obama said he would stop the rise of the seas. One of you is wrong.

The environmentalist's goal is to make every project cost twice as much as it normally would.

That way, one project will get built, but another will not, because the money has already been spent meeting useless environmental regulations on the first project.

So while the wackos techically don't have enough political power to outright halt a project, they do have enough power to make one project cost as much as two. So the second project is "halted" because there is no money.

See how it works. Its a win-lose.

"They care only about their own miserable hides and nothing about the grief their reprehensible acts will lay on the doorsteps of future generations."

NOw real grief lies in the 16 trillion dollar debt and no end in sight to adding to the debt. Yet people still support Obama. Talk about me me me.

"Of course it will happen. It will not all happen in our lifetime but it will happen. That is the problem with the, "Me, me, me people." They care only about their own miserable hides and nothing about the grief their reprehensible acts will lay on the doorsteps of future generations."

WRONG. Foolish people believe humans can control the planet's climate. They can not. At best we can work towards reducing pollution. That will have ZERO effect on sea levels. If we could magically transport all humans to another planet and just prior shut down every operating facility that consumes fossil fuels, the climate will continue to change and the sea level will either rise or not depending on the climate. The entire Global warming nonsense is purely about money and nothing else.

$320 million in government waste. That would pay for widening a long stretch of I-95, or for much of the un-built Raleigh outer loop.

Instead of spending the money where tens of thousands of people would benefit 365 days a year, politically connected and wealthy beachfront homeowners get a bridge to their vacation homes.
