CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The NC Comedy Arts Festival, a 10-day celebration of some of the funniest stand-up, sketch and improv performers in North America, kicks off Thursday in Carrboro.

The annual event was created in 2011 as a way to showcase Chicago-style improvisation to Carolina audiences and Southern improv performers. It has since grown into the largest comedy event in the southern United States. DSI Comedy Theatre in Carrboro produces this event.

Everything starts Thursday night with sketch comedy at  DSI Comedy Theater and some stand-up at Nightlight Club in Durham.

Some highlights of this year's festival:

  • Academy Award head writer Bruce Vilanch performs 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12 at DSI Comedy Theater.
  • The third annual North Carolina Laughter Championship seeks to crown the "2014 Laughter Champion." Get your giggles on at DSI Comedy Theater on Friday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m.
  • Part variety show, part competition The Adult Spelling Bee is always a blast. Check it out at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 10, at Flyleaf Books
Tickets for many of these shows are on sale now. Just go to the NC Comedy Arts Festival website to purchase.
