Nature is the muse at writing, art program for kids at Raulston Arboretum

JC Raulston Arboretum is trying out a new program for kids starting this week. Naturally Creative is led by local artist and landscape designer, Preston Montague. Students will learn to draw, write and think creatively, using nature as a subject. 

Here's a description from the Raleigh arboretum, which is part of N.C. State: "In each class, students will draw plants and animals en plein air, identify plants, and discover plant and animal relationships in the gardens of the JC Raulston Arboretum. They will use creative writing to expand upon the plant and animal world found in the gardens building their imagination. At the end of the course, students will have developed a product that can supplement a portfolio. Students participating in all four classes will be able to select a piece to be printed onto the cover of a notepad for the students to continue their observations and writings."

The program is designed for kids ages 9 to 13. They can take all four classes or just sign up for an individual class. The cost is $40 for an individual class or $120 for the whole course. Students should bring a sketchbook to use. 

They are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., July 22, July 29, Aug. 5 and Aug. 12.
