The N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences offers a science program for middle school girls

Girls in sixth and seventh grade are invited to apply for the N.C. Museum of Natural Science's Girls in Science: Future Focus.

The program is a special career exploration edition of the museum's popular Girls in Science Connect: Nature after school program. According to the description, each week, girls will meet a female scientist or other STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) professional, hear her story and engage in fun, hands-on activities related to her career. Girls will have the opportunity to present posters on their experience at the Museum’s Diversify STEM: Youth Connections event.

The program will celebrate 25 years of Girls in Science at the museum and will include an intensive, 10-week program for sixth and seventh grade girls, who have shown ability and strong interest in the sciences, especially the natural sciences. The Girls in Science mission is to engage girls in hands-on science experiences in the natural world and in the museum, and to create a safe atmosphere where girls’ natural curiosity can flourish, the museum's website says.

The free is $150 per child. Full or partial need-based scholarships are available. The program runs 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday afternoons, from Jan. 23 to march 27. Applications are due Nov. 27 and should include recommendations from a teacher and other adult.

The downtown Raleigh museum's website has more information, including links to the applications (for both students and parents/guardians).
