Natural sciences museum program designed for middle school girls

Posted August 6, 2013

This sounds like an amazing program for middle school girls who love science:

Girls in Science Connect: Nature at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences is an eight-week program for sixth and seventh grade girls who have shown ability and strong interest in science, according to the museum's website.

"The Girls in Science mission is to engage girls in hands-on science experiences in the natural world and in the museum, and to create a safe atmosphere where girls’ natural curiosity can flourish," according to the website.

Participants will meet female scientists from a range of disciplines, go behind the scenes at the museum and go out in the field. The program ends with a Night at the Museum overnight stay and an open house for parents and teachers.

The program can accept up to 20 girls from Wake and surrounding counties. A current or previous science teacher and another adult unrelated to them must nominate them. The group will meet weekly. The website notes that it is a "major time investment." The program fee is $150 and covers equipment and expenses.

For more information, check the museum's website. Applications are due by 5 p.m., Sept. 16. The program begins Oct. 3.

The Boys in Science program is a summer camp for rising 7th and 8th grade boys. There are also great camps for younger girls and boys. Once they are in high school, the museum has amazing Junior Curator and Junior Volunteer programs

The Museum also offers a Boys in Science program!

I sincerely applaud their efforts to encourage girls to go into science, but what about the boys? My experience shows boys need support too as the number attending college have steadily declined. This is particularly true in households where there is no male role model. All kids need support and encouragement.

Fantastic program! Both my daughters went through this program when they were in middle school.
