Army Specialist Tim Smith and Sergeant First Class Timothy White swam and waded in water up to their waists to reach the black lab.

"I'd want somebody to do it for my dog," White explained simply.

A dog captured on video swimming through floodwaters in Edgecombe County Sunday morning was one of multiple animals to be rescued in the wake of Hurricane Matthew, the Coast Guard said.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
