Nash-Rocky Mount school leaders name new superintendent

Dr. Shelton Jefferies, who previously worked for the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District and recently served as assistant superintendent of auxiliary services with the Union County School District will take on the role of superintendent on Jan. 4.

School officials said that during the search process, 17 candidates from eight different states were considered for the position and seven were interviewed.

“Although there were many qualified candidates, the board felt that Dr. Jefferies’ visionary leadership and record of success in team-building and raising student achievement would best serve the Nash-Rocky Mount students, staff and community,” read a statement from the district.

Jefferies’ appointment comes after former superintendent Anthony Jackson resigned from his position in June during a lengthy closed meeting with school board members. His comments, following the board’s 6-5 vote acceptation his resignation, suggested that he was forced out of his job.
