BAILEY, N.C. — A Nash County farmer working in his wheat field escaped injury on Thursday when his combine caught fire, authorities said.

The huge farming equipment buckled under the heat of the fire. Part of the cab burned and the blaze melted the tires.

Volunteer firefighters in Bailey kept dousing the combine with water after they put out the flames.

The fire also destroyed up to 6 acres of the wheat field, located on Pace Road between Highway 264 Alternate and Stoney Hill Church Road.

The farmer did not suffer any burns.

Firefighters are still trying to determine what caused the equipment to catch fire.
