Raleigh, N.C. — News & Observer publisher Orage Quarles III announced Friday he would retire on June 13, 2016.
Quarles, 65, started his career in 1969 with the Gannett-owned San Bernardino Sun. He has held various business and publishing posts at a number of newspapers, including becoming publisher of The Herald in Rock Hill, S.C. in 1993 and the publisher of the Modesto Bee of Modesto California in 1996.
He took the top post at the News & Observer in 2000.
"I'm one of those lucky people who found their career passion early in life," Quarles said. "Linda and I have enjoyed every community that we have lived in and are fortunate to end this chapter of our lives in Raleigh. It's been a heck of a ride."
He and his wife, Linda, have been married for 43 years. The couple has two daughters, and two grandchildren.
