Gov. Pat McCrory attends his last Council of State meeting on Dec. 6, 2016.

— Newly released records show former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory signed a state law nullifying anti-discrimination protections for LGBT people after seeing a poll indicating the move would be politically popular.

The Charlotte Observer reports (http://bit.ly/2lSjmdY) newly released emails show McCrory responded by writing "wow" after his political strategist shared a poll indicating broad opposition to a Charlotte non-discrimination ordinance.

That exchange came one day before state lawmakers passed House Bill 2 in a one-day special session last March and McCrory signed it into law hours later.

The law excludes sexual orientation and gender identity from anti-discrimination protections. It also requires transgender people to use restrooms in public buildings matching the sex on their birth certificates.

The law triggered a backlash from LGBT advocates and businesses who say it's discriminatory.

There are several ways to remove legislators - without using a veto. They are't very nice, but then neither are these veto-proof legislature members.

Wrap a suit around a vacum and you have a more effective leader than Pat.

I'm shocked! I though HB2 was passed to deal with the crisis of all the girls who have been sexually assualted in bathrooms by men dressed up like women. But to think that McCrory signed HB2... for political reasons! I'm going to faint from the surprise. What are we going to learn next...that rapists haven't been dressing up like women?

Nice try WRAL. BUT the lawmakers totally responsible for HB2 are almost all still in the legislature. AND they are veto proof. So what happened to McCrory is a non factor. PLUS the Lt Governor won big and Forest is probably the biggest supporter of HB2. Trying to scare legislators they will wind up like McCrory is for liberal get togethers only.
