The N.C. Zoo in Asheboro will be closed on Tuesday because of potential damage from Irma.

"The safety of the animals, employees and guests is the main priority of the zoo at this time," says a zoo press release. "In an effort to be prepared for the storm, various teams from the zoo met in advance to ensure all aspects of the park are ready. As with any major weather event, all animals are in safe, secure quarters."

The zoo is about 90 minutes from Raleigh.

Irma, now downgraded to a tropical storm after plowing a destructive path through the Caribbean and Florida, could bring some minimal wind and rain to the Triangle late Monday and Tuesday, according to WRAL meteorologists.
