RALEIGH, N.C. — Post offices across the state will not extend their hours on April 15 – the deadline for mailing 2009 federal tax returns, U.S. Postal officials said Friday.

Taxpayers filing on the last day are encouraged to mail their returns prior to the close of business.

The Raleigh Main Post Office, located at 1 Floretta Place, will accept already stamped and prepared tax returns until midnight, but no retail service will be available after 5 p.m.

The only options available after the post offices close are Automated Postal Centers (APC), which are available 24 hours for purchasing postage with the required date using a credit or debit card. Customers can find the nearest APC online.

Some contract post offices are normally open past 6 p.m.

Cruizer’s at New Falls of Neuse Road in Raleigh and Juicy Java in Kernersville will be open until 6:30 p.m., and La Plaza Latina on Wake Forest Road in Durham will close at 10 p.m.
