RALEIGH, N.C. — As federal officials offer their own responses to the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, the most vocal gun rights group in Raleigh has a suggestion as to what the state's response to the massacre should be.

"When the General Assembly convenes on January 9, 2013, Grass Roots North Carolina will immediately push for legislation enabling teachers and other concealed handgun permit-holders to protect students from violent predators on the state’s campuses," Grass Roots North Carolina wrote in a news release Tuesday.

GRNC President Paul Valone made the case for the change in an opinion piece published in The Charlotte Observer.

Lawmakers will return to Raleigh for a one-day organization session on Jan. 9 and then return to work later that month.

"It's too early to talk about these things," said Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Henderson,  who as rules chairman controls the flow of legislation through the Senate. He said lawmakers would discuss gun policy proposals next year.
