If you're looking for a unique excursion this summer, North Carolina's Amtrak is offering a summer deal for families.

Through August, kids ages 2 to 12 can ride the train for $5 each way in North Carolina on most weekdays and Saturdays. There are about a half dozen trains daily to Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte and other North Carolina cities on the Piedmont and Carolinian, so you could take a day trip for lunch, for instance, or make it an overnight stay.

Here is the fine print:

It applies to up to two children ages 2 to 12 with the purchase of a regularly priced adult ticket to travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays in North Carolina.
Offer is valid for travel through Aug. 31.
