MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Portions of N.C. Highway 540 and Davis Drive will be shut down through next Friday for the filming of "Main Street," a movie starring Orlando Bloom and Colin Firth.

Since Friday morning, one eastbound lane of N.C. 540, between Davis Drive and N.C. Highway 55 in Morrisville, and one lane of the Davis Drive exit have been closed. That closure will remain in effect until next Friday.

Starting Monday, nightly closures will shut down all of N.C. 540, between Davis Drive and N.C. 55, and Davis Drive, between Kitt Creek Road and George Watts Hill Drive. Those closures will last from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. and continue through Friday.

On Saturday, May 8, two lanes of N.C. 540 East will be closed for about four hours from 9 a.m.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation suggested these detours:

  • For westbound traffic on N.C. 540, take Exit 67 onto Davis Drive and follow the signs onto Kitt Creek Road, which intersects with N.C. 55.
  • For eastbound traffic onto N.C. 540, take N.C. 55 to Morrisville-Carpenter Road, turn left onto Davis Drive and then right onto McCrimmon Parkway. From there, turn left onto N.C. Highway 54/Chapel Hill Road and take the exit onto N.C. 540.

In Durham, parts of Main Street have been shut down since April 20 for the movie filming. Business owners have complained, saying they weren't given notice of the road closures.

Aaron Syrett, director of the North Carolina Film Office, estimated filming would create about 300 temporary jobs for acting extras and film crew members. That would translate into $6 million to $10 million in local spending.

In the past 30 years, more than 800 films and 15 television series have shot on location in North Carolina. Twenty-four were filmed in Durham, including 1988's "Bull Durham" and 1997's "Kiss the Girls."
