A Cary man sentenced last week to life in prison for killing his wife passed on a plea deal that could have meant a release from prison.

LUMBERTON, N.C. — A Cary man sentenced last week to life in prison for killing his wife passed on a plea deal that could have meant a release from prison.
Robeson County District Attorney Johnson Britt confirmed Monday that Myron Britt rejected an offer early on in his trial that could have put him in prison for 8 to 32 years in exchange for a second-degree murder plea.
Myron Britt was convicted Wednesday of first-degree murder in the August 2003 shooting death of his wife, Nancy Britt, at her sister's home in Lumberton.
The trial was the second for him in the slaying. A June 2006 trial ended in a mistrial when the jury deadlocked 11-1 in favor of conviction.
Johnson Britt – who's not related to Myron Britt – said he made the offer after concerns that the defendant would push for another mistrial.
Johnson Britt argued that Britt was drowning in debt and killed his wife for the $800,000 life insurance policy.
