Museum's Science Cafe focuses on how to teach kids advanced math

As part of the downtown Raleigh museum's regular Thursday evening Science Cafes, this week's topic is Adventurous Math for the Playground Crowd.

The program features Dr. Maria Droujkova and Yelena McManaman. Droujkova is a curriculum developer and mathematics education researcher. According to the museum's website, "she brings together leaders in mathematics education, developers, parents and teachers for projects and discussions of family mathematics, early algebra, individualized learning, math games and math clubs. Manaman is a blogger, education consultant and developer, focusing on young children. She homeschools her son and organizes classes and events for kids. Online, she helps other parents collaborate around advanced math for young children."

The two co-authored a Creative Commons, crowd funded book “Moebius Noodles: Adventurous Math for the Playground Crowd."

Thursday's session focuses on how parents, teachers and communities can help kids learn advanced math and offers more information about the Moebius Noodles Project.

The talk starts at 7 p.m. and is followed by a Q&A session at The Daily Planet Cafe in the Nature Research Center. It's free.
