DURHAM, N.C. — The Museum of Life and Science in Durham welcomed a litter of Red Wolf puppies Saturday, according to an Instagram post.

While they have not announced the number of puppies in the litter, with fewer than 300 red wolves alive today, the museum staff is thrilled to welcome the new additions to the critically-endangered population.

While all wolves will remain in the Explore the Wild habitat, the pups and mother will likely stay in their dens until the puppies begin to open their eyes and become more active.

“The first 30 days are a particularly critical time and we will continue regular monitoring,” the post reads.

Those interested in seeing the puppies should come by beginning in early June and throughout the summer months.

“Take your time and visit regularly. Pups will become more active over the course of the summer,” Animal Department Director Sherry Samuels said. “Look for museum staff at the wolf habitat throughout the summer to answer questions and keep you updated on the latest development changes.”

Another litter of red wolf puppies were born at the museum last year.
