LOUISBURG, N.C. — A 35-year-old Zebulon man was charged early Friday after authorities say he led them on a chase through parts of Wake and Franklin counties.

Michael Shane Varnum, of 301 E. Stronach Ave., is charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, fleeing to elude arrest and driving while impaired.

Authorities said an officer used a pit maneuver to stop Varnum's white Ford truck at about 9:45 p.m. Thursday on South Bickett Boulevard in Louisburg.

Officers from the Zebulon, Wake Forest, Franklin and Louisburg police departments, and troopers from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, were all involved in the chase.

Five police cruisers were damaged in the chase, but there were no injuries reported, according to authorities. No further information has been released.
