MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — A 28-year veteran of the Mount Olive Police Department was sworn in Wednesday as police chief.

Ralph Schroeder, who previously held the rank of major, becomes the 28th police chief in the department's history.

Schroeder replaces Emmett Ballree, who resigned in July amid allegations that he used a town credit card at a gas station to fill the tank of his personal vehicles.

No criminal charges were filed in case.
