LOUISBURG, N.C. — A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 401 in Franklin County, authorities said.

A 2003 Infiniti was southbound on U.S. 401 at about 5 a.m. when the driver tried to pass another vehicle and collided with a northbound 2007 Harley Davidson about a half-mile north of N.C. Highway 98, authorities said.

The motorcyclist, Philip Munson, 51, of South Creek Drive in Louisburg, died at the scene. The driver of the Infiniti, Gorge Luis Labra, 20, of Cedar Bluff Lane in Louisburg, was airlifted to WakeMed in Raleigh for treatment of a broken leg and other injuries.

Labra was charged with driving while impaired, improper passing and not having a driver's license. Authorities said more charges are possible once they get the results of blood tests.

The highway was closed for about three hours between N.C. 98 and Tarboro road as Highway Patrol troopers investigated the crash and cleared away the wreckage.
