— A motorcyclist died Friday when a pickup truck turned into his path on Old Garner Road, authorities said.

Hugh Bailey tried to turn into a driveway in the 1600 block of Old Garner Road at about 11:15 a.m., and a westbound motorcyclist ran into the passenger side of his 1996 Ford pickup, authorities said.

William Joseph DeGrace, 33, of Garner, was pronounced dead at the scene. Bailey, 89, of 4111 Rock Quarry Road in Raleigh, was uninjured.

The State Highway Patrol said charges are pending against Bailey.

Sad situation for everyone. The motorcyclist was a friend of mine. My heart is heavy for the family as well as for the gentleman who was driving the truck.

They should do a driving test every year after age 70 but the driving tests are too easy for everyone, look how poorly the immigrants are driving. Pathetic.

Same thing happenend to my father in law , a 77 year man did the same thing to him , more STRINGENT testing should be done before the elderly can renew thier drivers licenses,I realize they don't want to give up their independence, but when its a matter of life and death something needs to be done ..

just as soon as this state gets some decent mass transit, it might work to have seniors not drive- easy to pull a license-how do you get people to where they need to be?

He most likely claimed to have not seen him, just like those 18 to 55 years old do when they pull in front of a motorcycle. But, I don't think he'll be driving anymore (after he goes to court). He'll still have license until then.

At 89 he most likely should NOT be driving anyway. I know how difficult it is to convince the elderly ones they should stop driving; but is has to be done to prevent things like this from happening.
