Motorcyclist dies after running red light in Durham, troopers say

Posted April 25

— A motorcyclist died Friday morning after running a red light and crashing into a tractor-trailer in Durham, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The motorcyclist's name will not be released until family is notified. The crash happened near Park and Davis drives shortly before 9:30 a.m.

Troopers say the 1994 Honda motorcycle was traveling north on Davis Drive when the rider ran a red light and crashed into the right side of a 2006 Sterling tractor-trailer that was turning left onto the Interstate 40 eastbound ramp.

A viewer sent WRAL News video of the crash, which showed the motorcycle on its side and emergency responders at the scene.

Good point. Along with a car, I drive a motorcycle and a bicycle on the road and am unbelievably alert to everything around me...pedestrians, loose dogs, sand/gravel in a turn, impatient/unaware/distracted car drivers, etc. Add to this that it's very difficult (and not likely) that someone would text while driving a motorcycle. So, I just assumed that the bike intentionally ran the red light. But, I don't really know.

Conversely, you don't know if this was unintentional. On what are you basing your assertion?

    At least it was quick.

Yes, lesson learned, you accidently run a stop light and a cast and crew of blameless and pristine internet commenters get to pass judgment on you without any knowledge of the accident or thought of the riders family and friends.
If I'm unlucky enough to make a mistake while riding, I pray that WRAL doesn't pick up on the story so my partner isn't exposed to this kind of junk while she grieves.

I hope the truck driver wasn't harmed by this bad driver. Maybe this will serve as a lesson for others. Or not...and I'll have someone riding my bumper tomorrow too.

Looks like a crotch rocket crash and no doubt the bike rider was speeding.

yes because a crotch rocket naturally means they were speeding. Certainly it isn't possible she or he blew the stop light because he/she was focused on several lines of traffic, the guy speeding up behind him and morning commuters preoccupied with their radios, cell phones, putting on make up and fiddling with the sunroof they may miss the bikers surrounding him. The guy/lady accidently blew a red light and is now gone. How about you take a second to stop judging and pay some respects, or just don't post at all.

To his/her family, I'm truly sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort and joy in the memories of your fallen loved one.

    RIP fellow biker.

If you are going for a motorcycle ride in heavy NC commuting traffic, you better have good motorcycle insurance, health insurance and life insurance coverage.

Good thing a "viewer" provided the images. We know WRAL doesn't really have any staff left to roll out for breaking news.

How about if the bikers slow down out there? It certainly would make them easier to see.

...RIP and prayers to his family.
