According to a wreck report, the accident happened around 1:15 p.m., when Robert Jim Emerson Bates, 57, tried to turn left from Edenburgh Road onto northbound Glenwood Avenue.

Bates, of 305 Lynwood Lane, failed to yield to the SUV, which was traveling south on Glenwood, and the vehicles collided, according to the report.

Such a shock!... My condolences to Emerson's family. He was a funny, kind man who always had interesting stories and a great sense of humor. He will be missed. http://www.rfhr.com/obituaries/Robert-Bates-4/#!/Obituary

My 6 month qualification after corps school was on an OB/GYN & Orthopedic surgical ward .... Never rode a motorcycle after that duty.

I tell new riders to play defense when on a motorcycle. Watch mirrors to know it they know you are behind them. Watch head movement, they are going to make a turn. Friend( early 20's ) told me he started riding motorcycle. bragging about popping wheelies and going 120 mph down I40. Doing what his friends were doing. I told him he was stupid and didn't need to have a motorcycle if he already riding like that. Hope he took it to heart. I started on a motorcycle at five and on the street at 16. I didn't get 40+ years of riding time for being dumb.

I have friends who ride and I get such a sinking feeling in my stomach any time I see a headline like this.

While there are bad motorcyclists out there, like the one who died over the weekend, most of these accidents are caused by drivers who don't look for motorcycles and/or drive distracted. A close friend was almost killed a few years ago when a car coming the opposite direction made a left turn right in front of him.

Pay attention when you drive folks!

5000 lb SUV vs. 1000 lb Motorcycle and rider.

If you ride a motorcycle make sure you have sufficient Liability , Property and especially Life Insurance.
