Mother, child thrown from truck in Sampson County wreck

Posted January 24, 2010

— A mother and child were thrown from a truck Saturday afternoon during a wreck in Sampson County.

According to the state Highway Patrol, Joel Santiago, 21, ran a stop sign and crashed into a car on Autry Mill Road, east of Interstate 95.

Santiago’s passengers, Michelle Wolfe, 30, and her 3-year-old son, Connor, were ejected from the vehicle, troopers said.

Paramedics transported Santiago, Wolfe and her child to Cape Fear Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Santiago was charged with running a stop sign, driving without a license, not restraining a child and having an open alcoholic container, troopers said.

Dunn Mayor Oscar Harris, 70, was driving the car that was hit by Santiago’s truck, troopers said. He and his wife were taken to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital as a precaution.

    LOC -

You're making that up. Not having a carseat for the child in the truck at the time of the crash (as I have learned) is prima facie evidence restraint wasn't used.

How do you know that child wasnt properly in a seat restraint? I have seen where kids get thrown from the car and the car seat was in properly. Sometimes a car seat can help and hinder.

Praying for all invlolved. Things could have been a whole lot worse and I pray that the young driver knows this and has learned a very important lesson. And shame on that Mother, why wasn't that child in a safety seat??? Glad that Mayor Harris and is wife are okay, they are very sweet people.
