Mother charged with neglect in abuse of infant son

Posted May 29, 2013

— A 20-year-old mother was charged Wednesday for failing to seek medical treatment for her 5-month-old child after he was allegedly abused by his father April 1, Spring Lake police said.

Krystal Lynn Cruz, of 700 Wellons Ave., is charged with neglect child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.

According to investigators, Cruz's decision not to seek medical treatment for her son resulted in major brain injuries. The infant was in the custody of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services on Wednesday. His condition was unavailable.

The boy's father, 24-year-old Fort Bragg soldier Steve Ray Bravo, also of 700 Wellons Ave., was charged with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury April 2 in the incident.

Bravo and Cruz took the child to Cape Fear Medical Center three days after the assault, saying he wasn't breathing properly, police said. Hospital staff determined the boy suffered major brain injuries, and they notified police, saying the injuries weren't the result of an accident.

An arrest warrant states the infant also suffered had a torn retina and bruising, swelling and redness in the forehead and nose.

District Court Judge Luis Olivera ordered that Bravo, a specialist assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion at Fort Bragg, be confined to barracks on post if he is able to post bond.

Cruz was taken into custody Tuesday and was in the Cumberland County jail Wednesday under a $30,000 secured bond.

"He is the Father and in the military why drive across town instead of to to hospital on Ft Bragg " I was thinking the same thing Sunshine - but I figured they thought they could somehow hide the child's abuse from the military - don't appear to be the brightest bulbs in the shed.

Throw them in jail and lose the key; him because what he did to an innocent, defenseless child is horrific beyond description and her because she must be some unfeeling monster to let that happen to a child she gave birth to.

What the heck has happened to our younger generations that they seem to not respect people or life? It is rather scarey.

Her age is no excuse for this tragedy. I pray that the child will find parents who will love and not hurt him.

Tragic loss of an innocent, beautiful child. I will never understand how any person, especially the child's biological parent's, could harm a baby or child.

I pray that justice will be served swiftly to both and that the child finds a home with loving parents.

What a shame! A shame somebody could do this to an infant!

    Her bond should be higher.
