Spring Lake, N.C. — A 20-year-old mother was charged Wednesday for failing to seek medical treatment for her 5-month-old child after he was allegedly abused by his father April 1, Spring Lake police said.
Krystal Lynn Cruz, of 700 Wellons Ave., is charged with neglect child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury.
According to investigators, Cruz's decision not to seek medical treatment for her son resulted in major brain injuries. The infant was in the custody of the Cumberland County Department of Social Services on Wednesday. His condition was unavailable.
The boy's father, 24-year-old Fort Bragg soldier Steve Ray Bravo, also of 700 Wellons Ave., was charged with child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury April 2 in the incident.
Bravo and Cruz took the child to Cape Fear Medical Center three days after the assault, saying he wasn't breathing properly, police said. Hospital staff determined the boy suffered major brain injuries, and they notified police, saying the injuries weren't the result of an accident.
An arrest warrant states the infant also suffered had a torn retina and bruising, swelling and redness in the forehead and nose.
District Court Judge Luis Olivera ordered that Bravo, a specialist assigned to the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion at Fort Bragg, be confined to barracks on post if he is able to post bond.
Cruz was taken into custody Tuesday and was in the Cumberland County jail Wednesday under a $30,000 secured bond.
