RALEIGH, N.C. — A cold front that caused Sunday's temperatures to drop nearly 30 degrees from Saturday's highs brought rain that will stay in the Triangle through Tuesday evening.

The rain could produce high water, and a severe flood watch was issued Sunday in 70 North Carolina counties and one Virginia county, including Wake, Cumberland, Durham, Johnston and Orange.

WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said that many areas could see between two and six inches of rain before the front moves out on Tuesday night.

"It's going to be a wet period for a while," Wilmoth said. "This is some much needed rain. It's been pretty dry so far for the month."

Although the region could use the rainfall, Wilmoth warned that the steady rain could cause the ground to become saturated, leading to the potential for flooding.

A Flood Watch will be in effect from 12 a.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Tuesday.

Sunday's cool temperatures will stick around Monday, when temperatures are forecast to climb into the upper 50s and low 60s. Temperatures will warm up by mid-week, with forecast highs in the 80s.
