Morehead plans solar eclipse party

The N.C. mountains are busy right now, gearing up for a total solar eclipse, which will occur on Monday, Aug. 21. On that day, during what's called "totality," it becomes dark during the day, the temperature drops and the Sun's corona, along with bright stars and planets, will become visible.

Here in the Triangle, like in most of the United States, we won't experience a total eclipse, but a partial solar eclipse will last for up to a few hours. There will be a bunch of events to mark the day, including a solar eclipse party at Morehead Planetarium and Science Center in Chapel Hill.

It runs noon to 4:30 p.m., Aug. 21. Tickets are $6 each. One pair of Solar Eclipse viewing glasses is included per ticket.

The afternoon includes a short planetarium program about the solar eclipse, along with chances to view the solar eclipse or catch the live stream of the totality line, games, food trucks and more. Morehead is one of 50 locations in North and South Carolina to host a party for the public on Aug. 21.

Morehead has more information on its website, including information about how to safely view the eclipse.
