— Four additional molestation charges have been filed against a former coach at a Sanford athletics facility, police said Wednesday.

Phillip Thompson, 31, was arrested three weeks ago on 11 counts of taking indecent liberties with a child.

The initial charges were in connection with allegedly inappropriate touching of 11 girls, ages 6 to 15, at the Sanford Academy of Cheerleading, Martial Arts, Dance and Gymnastics, at 2731 Lee Ave, between July 2006 and the beginning of this year.

The new indecent liberties with a child charges involved alleged assaults on girls between August 2005 and last November, police said.

Because of the new charges, authorities have raised Thompson's bond from $1 million to $1.4 million.

Thompson was fired from the Sanford Academy in January for reasons unrelated to the case, police said. He had since taken a coaching job at a Mooresville gym.

My daughter just finished a swim class at the YMCA. Her MALE teacher was way better than the female teachers. He was genuinely interested in the kids, pushed them to try harder and kept the class fun for all. I hope he is able to continue doing what he obviously enjoys and that he is never the victim of a narrow minded parent who would deny him the opportunity to teach or coach merely because he was born with the inappropriate parts, in their minds.

"Every day mothers all over this country leave their kids in the hands of unknown men simply because they think they have no choice. Not me...not anymore. If the caretakers are not female, we're out the door. I know that not all men are perverts but that's no comfort when your kid had been in an afterschool program and later learn that one of the male caretakers has been charged with crimes against children. If you are a pervert, where are you going to try to get a job -- Pep Boys or the YMCA?"

If a businessman used such a warped perspective in hiring, he would be brought up on gender discrimination charges. There are plenty examples of bad female caretakers, think Cary nanny. You may have trouble understanding this, but not all men are gear heads and very few are child molesters. Likewise, not all women are naturally good caretakers, and some are dangerous to children. continued...

Be glad your husband or son doesn't work at the Y. I'd hate for someone to assume your hubby is a pervert.
