More child sex charges filed against former Fayetteville coach

— Police on Friday filed more child sex charges against a former coach at a Fayetteville high school.

Rodney Scott, 50, of the 2300 block of Vestal Avenue, now faces eight counts of statutory sex offense with a child, including four that were filed Friday. His bond was increased from $140,000 to $800,000.

Scott was arrested Monday in connection with an alleged assault of a 14-year old boy at Scott’s home on Sunday.

News coverage of the arrest prompted a flood of tips from people claiming that Scott had abused them or to know someone who had been abused by him.

Investigators said information from one of those tips led to the new charges, which are in connection to incidents that allegedly occurred between June and August 2006. The alleged male victim was 15 years old at the time, police said. The victim revealed to officials that additional incidents that occurred between between April and May 2007.

Officials said Friday that two separate victims have accused Scott of assault.

One victim, who was 14-years-old at the time of the offense, reported that Scott assaulted him in April 2015 at Scott's residence. The second victim, who was 15-years-old at the time of the offense, reported that Scott assaulted him from March to April of 2003, also at Scott's residence.

Detectives served the additional warrants on Scott at the Cumberland County Detention Center, where he as remained since his arrest on Monday.

Scott volunteered as a boys’ varsity basketball assistant coach at Pine Forest High School from 2013 until this past January, according to Cumberland County Schools officials. He also worked as a safe schools coordinator at Pine Forest High from August 2011 to June 2013 and as a substitute teacher from 1997 to 2010.

Police have set up a dedicated phone line to encourage other possible victims to come forward. Anyone who believes he or she is a victim or anyone who knows someone they believe has been the victim of a sexual assault or other crime involving Scott is asked to call 910-433-1163.
