— Police filed more charges Friday against a teen accused of gunning down the owner of a Durham convenience store two weeks ago.

Jarrell Paylor, 16, is charged with murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of 41-year-old John Wesley Pruitt Jr. at the Family Fare at 2918 Guess Road.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an attempted robbery.

Paylor was also shot during the incident, and he was released from Duke University Hospital on Friday and taken to the Durham County jail.

Police also charged him with two counts of robbery with a dangerous weapon in connection with a Feb. 13 incident at Cruizers, at 1914 Sedwick Road, in which an employee and a customer were robbed at gunpoint.

He also faces charges of larceny from a person and possession of a stolen firearm in the Feb. 1 theft of a pistol from a man on North Roxboro Street.

That was a rapid escalation from robbery of an individual, to robbery of a store then attempted robbery and murder. It's a blessing (for him, his family and the GP) that he was apprehended. This kid was on a path of destruction that couldn't end well for anyone.
