More arrests possible in Halifax dog-fight investigation

Erica Gary, 40, and her son, Zhaqwaun Jevontae Gary, 19, of 1045 Stack Powell Road, were arrested Sunday on a number of drug-related charges after deputies seized 68 marijuana plants from their home.

Nineteen pit bulls and two puppies were also taken as a result of an 18-month investigation, but no charges have yet to be filed regarding the dog-fighting allegations.

Investigators said the animals are being kept at an undisclosed location and that the animals have older injuries that are consistent with dog-fighting.

It's unclear yet if or when any of the dogs will be put up for adoption since they are considered evidence.

Deputies went to the Garys' home Friday night and found a large number of cars in the yard and lights on in a shed behind the residence. Several people ran from the area when they arrived.

Deputies obtained a search warrant and worked with animal control officers to seize the animals, as well a dog-fighting pen, dog training weights, syringes and animal medications.

Both Garys are out of jail on bond and are scheduled for court on June 5.
