VASS, N.C. — A log went through the windshield of a car on U.S. Highway 1 in Vass late Thursday, but the driver suffered injuries that weren't considered life-threatening, authorities said.

The freak accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. when the a tractor-trailer hauling logs went under a bridge on U.S. 1 Business. Authorities said one of the logs caught on the underside of the bridge and snapped in two, with one section flying back into a car that was following the truck.

The unidentified driver was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, and the highway was shut down for an hour as emergency crews pulled the driver from the car and cleared the wreckage.
