Moore teacher arrested, fired for alleged relationship with student

Posted May 8, 2013

— A teacher at Southern Middle School in Southern Pines lost his job Wednesday and faces sex charges for an alleged improper relationship with a student at another Moore County school.

Gregory Kurt Smith, 50, of 429 Flynn McPherson Road in Cameron, taught social studies at the school. Neighbors say he has a wife and three grown children.

He was arrested Wednesday morning while school was in session and was being held on $1 million secured bond.

The arrest report says Smith's victim was a 17-year-old girl at Pinecrest High School.

The school system moved quickly to protect the alleged victim and other students.

In statement issued Wednesday afternoon, a Moore County schools spokesman said, "The safety and well-being of our students is always our first priority, and we purposely strive to ensure our employees are held to the highest moral and ethical standards. An occurrence such as this deeply affects both our school system and our community."

The school system planned to make counselors available at the high school and the middle school.

I think it was wrong that they did that in front of his students, especially since he had a lot of students who loved him as a teacher!

My guess is, at some point, he either substituted at the high school were she was, or she went to his middle school. Wral doesn't say. If not, it might be a huge ado about nothing.

This guy is a pervert. I don't care is she was 'legal.'

His family must be thrilled. I wonder if he's now sleeping on the couch.

NC GS § 14‑27.7 says "If a defendant, who is a teacher, ... and who is at least four years older than the victim engages in vaginal intercourse or a sexual act with a victim who is a student, at any time during or after the time the defendant and victim were present together in the same school, but before the victim ceases to be a student, the defendant is guilty of a Class G felony, except when the defendant is lawfully married to the student."

So, she was not at the same school. What law did he violate?

Case is far from obvious. The young lady is above the age of consent and he wasn't a teacher at her school. It narrows down to very intricate wording in NC statues, and I am sure we will either see a slap on the wrist guilty plea down to misdemeanor (instead of felony) OR quite strong defense in the courtroom.

He might even be found innocent, if it goes to court.

Of course morally, it's a different story.

" There needs to be tougher punishment for these pediphiles working in our school systems. "

The guy is not a pedophile. The young lady was 17 years old. The only reason the man is in trouble is that he was a teacher. If he had been in any other profession, it would have been 100% legal for him to have a relationship with a 17 yr old. Creepy? Yes, but still legal.

Further proof that the kids are alright. It's the adults that need tending to.

almost on a daily basis, I see something like this on the news! WTH is going on with our teachers/schools!?

It's always been there, just rarely made it to the light of day. Many seem to think because it was never in the news that the problem didn't exist.

just had to resign because the family didn't press charges

All the penalties in the world are useless if the victim won't press charges....which means she would likely not testify.
