Moore County names new sheriff

The Moore County Board of Commissioners has promoted Neil Godfrey to sheriff, officials said Wednesday.

CARTHAGE, N.C. — The Moore County Board of Commissioners has promoted Neil Godfrey to sheriff, officials said Wednesday.

Godfrey, who has served as chief deputy of the Moore County Sheriff's Office since 2002, succeeds Lane Carter, who retired last month.

Commissioners also promoted Jerrell Seawell to chief deputy. He has served in the department for 24 years, most recently heading the narcotics unit.

Darrin Ritter has been promoted to captain in the narcotics unit, succeeding Seawell, and Wes Hart was promoted to lieutenant to serve as Ritter's second in command.
