MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — A Moore County man walked free Wednesday when a jury acquitted him on charges of indecent liberties with a child and sexual battery.

"I am glad to have my name cleared," said Carl James Nunnery, after the verdict was read.

Nunnery had been arrested in May 2013 on allegations of inappropriate contact with an 8-year-old child that were purported to have happened in June 2012. He maintained his innocence throughout, and the court agreed.

After Nunnery was acquitted, his defense attorney, Arthur M. Blue, argued that prosecutors had failed to submit any evidence that the offense had occurred. Superior County Judge Lindsay R. Davis agreed with Blue and dismissed an additional charge against Nunnery.

"Carl Nunnery has never wavered in his innocence from the day I first met him until he walked out of court on Wednesday with his acquittal," Blue said.
