Carthage, N.C. — A former bus driver for Southern Middle and Pinecrest High schools in Moore County was charged Thursday with indecent liberties with a child, soliciting a child by computer and sexual battery, authorities said.
Troy Jareau Thomas, 25, of Aberdeen, was released on a $75,000 unsecured bond, according to Moore County Sheriff's Office Capt. Bill Mackey.
The alleged victim, a 15-year-old boy, was not a student on Thomas' bus. They two met online, Mackey said.
School system officials said they learned of the allegations against Thomas, who was hired in May 2008 as a substitute bus driver, on Sept. 7. Two days later, he resigned.
In a letter to parents, principals at Southern Middle and Pinecrest High said that students' safety and well-being is the school system's top priority.
"This situation was addressed swiftly and appropriately by the school district," the letter states. "We want to assure our parents that we conduct background checks on all prospective employees and diligently seek and expect the highest standards of adult leadership and example for our students."
Thomas is due in court Sept. 30.
