Tourists return to Bodie Island Lighthouse

— The National Park Service has scheduled eight moonlight tours for visitors to Cape Hatteras and Bodie Island lighthouses in the summer of 2015.

2015 full moon tours will take place on:

  • July 1 at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
  • July 31 at 8:30 and 9:30 p.m.
  • Aug. 29 at 8 and 9 p.m.
  • Sept. 27 at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.
There are no advance tickets. A limited number of tickets will be available for sale on-site on the day of the tour. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for those 11 and under or 62 and older.

The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Ticket Booth is open from 8:15 a.m. to 5:40 p.m. through August, and 8:15 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. in September. The Bodie Island Lighthouse Ticket Desk is open from 8:45 a.m. to 4:25 p.m.

Guides will share stories of keepers of old and lead visitors on a flashlight climb to the working lantern room where the full moon is visible over the Atlantic Ocean.

Tour organizers warn that the climb can be dark, steep, hot, humid and close. Those who are uncomfortable with those conditions may not enjoy a moonlight tour.
