— Franklin County authorities are investigating the theft of more than $7,000 from the residents of a Louisburg assisted living center.

Sheriff Jerry Jones said the money was in accounts for more than a dozen residents of Autumn Wind Retirement Home, on Leonard Road. The residents used the money for personal items and medication.

Autumn Wind recently changed ownership, and Jones said it's unclear whether the money was missing before that.

Autumn Wind of Roseboro is not affiliated with the Louisburg facility.

Many if not most assisted living facilities hire pretty much anyone off the street, minimally train new hires, pay their workers minimum wage, are not required for certification to perform evacuation drills nor even have enough staff to safely vacate residents from a facility in case of an emergency especially in the 4PM to 8 AM time period and on weekends when many staff no-shows happen. With these conditions in existence, situations described in this article and worse can occur.

Money, money, money.... Give the thief life in prison for stealing it. Now, if a nurse in sensible shoes decides to smother one or a few of the residents with a satin pillow, he (or she) will probably get off with a slap on the wrist.

Not surprise at all. My mother work in one of these places for awhile and had to quit due to the abuse she saw every day and just couldn't take it.

There is a special fiery pit in Hades for people who abuse people who are unable to defend themselves.

The thief or thieves might do well to invest in some asbestos long johns.
