RALEIGH, N.C. — As the House and Senate are poised to take up, respectively, bills prohibiting the expansion of the state Medicaid program and overhauling the state unemployment system, both measures are criticized publicly.

A group of North Carolina physicians called on state lawmakers to accept federal support for Medicaid expansion.

Also, Acting U.S. Labor Secretary Seth Harris warned that changing the unemployment system would end federal jobless benefits to thousands of workers who have been unemployed for months.
