Mom, son arrested during Halifax courtroom ruckus

A jury convicted Antwaan Deandre Clanton, 38, of felony breaking and entering, larceny and injury to personal property.

Lt. Bruce Temple said that as Judge Alma Hinton talked to jurors, 55-year-old Lillian Clanton became verbally disruptive. Sheriff's deputies tried to take her from the courtroom, Temple said, and Antwaan Clanton also became disruptive, turning over a table and resisting deputies. They used a stun gun on him to subdue him.

Lillian Clanton, of Weldon, was charged with disorderly conduct in a public building and contempt of court. She was ordered held without bond.

Antwaan Clanton's sentencing was delayed. Temple said deputies plan to charge him in connection with the courtroom incident.

Antwaan Clanton was on trial for charges stemming from a 2010 break-in and a break-in that happened a day after he was released from jail on July 14. He had finished serving a 16-month sentence for fraud and drug convictions.

Antwaan Clanton has more than three dozen convictions dating to 1991 and has spent more than 13 years of the past 20 behind bars, according to state Department of Correction records. He has been convicted numerous times of break-in and larceny, as well as assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a child, assault on a female and selling drugs.

Lillian Clanton has served probation for seven convictions dating to 1993, including assault with a deadly weapon, assault on an officer and drunk and disorderly behavior, DOC records state.
