HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. — A judge declared a mistrial Thursday after an Orange County jury deadlocked in the trial of a man charged with shooting and killing his stepfather.

Jurors split 8-4 in favor of convicting William Stroud of voluntary manslaughter in the death of Marshall Brown during an altercation in which Brown attacked Stroud with a baseball bat.

It was unclear whether prosecutors will attempt to retry Stroud in the case.
