Missing money search in Hahn murder case

In April, Hahn, a Democratic political strategist and fundraiser, was stabbed to death at her north Raleigh home, and her husband, Nation Hahn, was badly injured.

Broyhill, who was found at the scene with self-inflicted injuries, admitted to police that he brought the knife from his home. He had been invited to have dinner with the couple.

He has been indicted on charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. 

News of the crime rocked Raleigh's political circles.

Broyhill was a close friend of the couple. He was best man at their wedding and worked for Jamie Hahn's consulting firm, Blue Sky Strategies. Former Congressman Brad Miller employed the firm to manage his campaign funds.

After the attack, WRAL News found tens of thousands of dollars in phantom refunds and payments in the Miller campaign's reports. Those checks were never received by the reported recipients.

At that time, Miller told WRAL News that at least $62,000 was missing from his campaign account. He said it appeared Broyhill had simply written checks to himself.  

Miller said other campaign staffers began to suspect Broyhill was embezzling funds and that Jamie Hahn had recently confirmed financial irregularities.

Jamie Hahn planned to ask Broyhill to hand over the campaign checkbook and bank records, Miller said. He said he couldn't confirm that conversation took place before the attack.

Hahn's stepfather told WRAL News he believes Hahn did confront Broyhill, and that prompted the attack. 

A search warrant that was issued July 12 and released Thursday reflects the seizure of Broyhill's personal bank records. 

Investigators have also searched the bank records for Miller's campaign account.
