SCOTLAND NECK, N.C. — A missing Halifax County woman has been found safe, authorities announced early Wednesday.

Edna Hopkins Williams, 42, had last been seen Sunday by her mother in Scotland Neck, and her car was found on Interstate 40 in Asheville. A Silver Alert for her was issued Tuesday evening.

Hopkins was found in Rocky Mount, according to the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
