CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A missing elderly Chatham County man with dementia was found safe early Sunday by deputies manning a checkpoint to look for drunken drivers.

A Silver Alert was issued for Nathan "Ray" Anderson, 76, after he was last seen Saturday morning driving away from his home in northern Chatham County. Authorities were concerned, in part, because his car didn't have air conditioning, and temperatures rose over 100 degrees Saturday.

Deputies recognized Anderson as he passed through the checkpoint on U.S. Highway 15, at Jack Bennett Road. They said he was healthy and safe.
