Posted September 3, 2009

— A Chatham County man is accused of stealing money from his church.

Johnnie Ray Lewis, 55, of 546 Roscoe Road in Bear Creek, was arrested Thursday on felonious embezzlement charges.

Lewis was employed as a pastor at the Lighthouse Baptist Church of Siler City. He is accused of misappropriating $22,200 of church money for a cabinet project, detectives said.

Lewis was released from jail under a $3,000 unsecured bond. He is scheduled to appear at the Pittsboro courthouse on Sept. 14.

No single person should ever be responsible for the money. Even in a church there should be checks and balances to protect the innocent as well as thwart the tempted.

As Gomer would say, "Shame, shame, shame!"

I agree with you, Solo. As a church treasurer, I know what comes in, what goes out, and have to account for every copper penny.

1Ti 6:10 For the love of money is at the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows.
