— A Methodist College student died Monday in a one-car wreck in Cumberland County, authorities said.

Raul Alonzo Smith, 18, of Spring Lake, was eastbound on McCormick Bridge Road at about 10:45 a.m. Monday when he lost control of his car about a half-mile east of N.C. Highway 210, authorities said. The car went off the right side of the road and slammed into a tree, authorities said.

Authorities cited excessive speed and the wet roadway as factors in the wreck, noting Smith was driving 75 mph in a 55-mph zone.
