— A Rocky Mount man was assaulted and robbed by five men outside Jimmy's Food Mart Saturday evening, police said.

Donte Howard told police that he talked briefly with a group of men who approached him as he exited the food mart at 719 Raleigh Road around 6:15 p.m.

The men assaulted Howard, then held him down while they stole two crosses, gold earrings, a cell phone, keys and change from him, police said. They fled on foot.

Warrants were issued charging Christopher Willie Jenkins, 23, and Jermale Levon Avent, 21, with common-law robbery. They haven't been located, and police are trying to identify the other three men.

Avent is listed as an absconder from probation or parole supervision, according to state Department of Correction records. He was convicted in 2009 of conspiracy to commit larceny over $1,000 and in 2007 of attempted discharging a firearm into property.
