SPRING HOPE, N.C. — Police said a man was shot in Nash County Friday around 9:40 a.m. after he exchanged fire with another man who was helping his former girlfriend to move from their shared home.

Authorities said the relationship involved domestic violence, and several members of her church were helping the woman move from the home along U.S. Highway 581 in Spring Hope.

When the boyfriend, 44-year-old Brian Dunlow, returned to the house, he fired shots at 45-year-old Tyler Holmes, who was among those helping the woman move.

Holmes returned fire at Dunlow, hitting him in the hand and leg.

Dunlow was taken to Wake Med with non-life-threatening injuries.

Everyone involved was still at the scene when police arrived.

Police said there are charges pending against Dunlow and that Holmes's actions were in self-defense.

Nash County Chief Deputy Brandon Medina said the church members tried to do the right thing by helping a friend out of a bad relationship.

But he recommends people in similar situations contact law enforcement.

"If you decide to help them and get them out of that situation, it doesn't hurt to have (officers from) your local police department or sheriff's office be in the vicinity," he said.
