Men cleared of shooting at Durham chief's car

Posted September 16, 2011

— Charges have been dropped against two men accused of shooting at an unmarked car driven by Durham Police Chief Jose Lopez last year.

Durham County prosecutors said they didn't have enough evidence to pursue a case against Tony “Big Red” Person, 28, and Lebron “Gutta” Brown, 22.

Lopez was driving near the intersection of South Roxboro and Dillard streets on April 29, 2010, when he got caught in the crossfire between men in two vehicles. One shot went through his windshield, but he wasn't injured.

Person and Brown were arrested two weeks later in Lynn, Mass.

Tony “Big Red” Person and Lebron “Gutta” Brown

Nice! If they have nicknames surrounded with quotes, they are guilty of basically anything you can find on them.

Did any of you read the article? The LAST SENTENCE says they were both arrested two weeks later. Yes, they've been cleared with shooting toward the Chief's vehicle. But they aren't cleared of the entire situation.

This is an example of what is wrong with the Durham County prosecutors office. They are unable to find evidence to pursue an obvious case like this which involves two men who are a danger to society & need to be locked up. But they are able to fabricate evidence and pursure the Duke Lacrosse case.

The N&O just recently outlined that the Durham's prosecutors office has even gone further downhill in leadership since Nifong was tossed out. Durham District Attorney Tracey Cline has no integrity as outlined by the N&O recent series about cases in which her conduct is under scrutiny

it said he was caught in cross fire between two men. it did not say THESE two men. although I suspect it was.

Really...how do you get nicknames in real life? That is just ridiculous. "big red" and "gutta" come on now.

glad he wasn't hurt but how is being in middle of crossfire NOT enough evidence? lets wait until they actually kill someone to punish them?

  • dgcreech Sep 16, 2011

Wait ... did I just read correctly that two men exchange gunfire at each other, damaging a police car, and charges were cleared?
